What is Scottish?
Fun!, Musings May 19th, 2006
Interesting that a survey of Scots has defined Scottishness as…
“Speaking with a Scottish accent and being born In Scotland.”
This was deemed more important than the colour of a person’s skin.
The more I think about it the more I agree. One of the things about Scotland that I love is our common identity. Black, White, Lowlander, Highlander…We all have the same feeling of Scottishness if we’ve been born here, and a good Scottish accent only strengthens the feeling.

So what’s “Scottish” for you? Here’s some of mine:
- Oor Wullie
- The Broons
- Irn Bru
- The Sunday Post
- Our sense of humour
- Swearing profusely - only the Scots can tell you to “Fuck off” and make it sound friendly!
- Tennent’s Lager
- McEwan’s Export
- Raspberries
- Black Pudding Suppers
- Haggis - yummy!
- Buckfast - not so yummy!
- Wally Dugs (Only those of you with very old grannies will know this one)
- For me it’s not about Golf (hate it) or Tartan (love it but it was really invented by Queen Victoria!)
