Veils, Crosses and God
Rants October 28th, 2006
I getting very tired of the bullshit being spouted by all the various god-botherers.
Should Muslim women have to wear the veil, should Christians be allowed to wear the cross at work, faith schools… and on and on…
Personally I think religion should have no place in any public policy so right away I’d remove all funding from divisive so-called faith schools.
ALL children in our society should have the same education and religious education should be an extra curricular activity paid for by the adherents. I don’t see why my taxes should be spent on education for people who choose to have an organised religion.

As for the clothing thing - well I don’t believe in “uniforms” and forcing people to wear what they don’t want to. For years I fought with my kids’ school over uniform. They never wore it and were constantly in trouble as a result, even though they were both “A” students and never behaved in an anti-social manner. No-one has ever been able to explain the benefits of school uniform, other than spout shite about it reducing bullying - how exactly does that work then?
I support a completely secular society and if you want to “worship” something then feel free but don’t expect me to have to pay for it.
I don’t really care what people choose to wear, it’s a personal choice, but I certainly don’t support people being forced to wear clothes they don’t want to. So if a woman chooses to wear a veil and is in no way forced to then that’s fine by me.
I don’t subscribe to the view that we need to see peoples’ faces for security reasons. I don’t feel very comfortable in a society that feels the need to video my every move.
Likewise, if a Christian wants to wear a cross it’s no problem to me - why should it be?
