Have I Slipped Into Another Dimension?
Politics, Rants June 20th, 2006
I sometimes wonder if I fell asleep sometime in the ’70s and woke up in some parallel universe.
Apparently there are plans to hold “Major Celebrations” to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Falklands War.
Celebrations!? More than 1,000 lives, including over 200 British soldiers, were lost in the 1982 conflict which served no purpose other than the agrandisement of the odious Maggie Thatcher. A quiet service to remember the poor souls who lost their lives in this utterly pointless war would be more appropriate.
Then there’s the poor old soul who’s been jailed for 3 months for not paying her Cooncil Tax! Jesus, she’s 69! I thought our prisons were already at bursting point but they seem to have found some space for a wee granny who has a legitimate reason to protest about the incompetents who run her council. She should have gone out and stabbed one of them, she’d have got away with a couple of hours of “community work” at worst!

If our cooncillors spent less on fucking “Smoking Cessation Officers”, “5-a-Day Advisors” and, worst of all, “Social” Workers they might have the money to actually perform the services we elect them to do. For those of you not exposed to our completely mad local government the 5-a-day Advisors spend their time going round “deprived” areas trying to convince the great unwashed that they should be eating 5 portions of fruit and veg every day - on a healthy salary of course.
Then to add to the madness we have the Great Gordon deciding that we’ll maintain our pointless nuclear deterrent at a cost of billions. I wouldn’t mind but apparently it hasn’t been targetted at anyone in particular since the end of the Cold War. Perhaps we could arrange for it to be pointed at the Labour Party Headquarters (Sorry NEW Labour Party).
Why do we need this? And why does it have to be on Scottish soil?
I just can’t wait for the next elections - I’m begging you all to PLEASE VOTE SNP next time round, this madness has to end and we have to take control of our own future.
